Thornton lined up with Teo Beaume in goal, protected by James Almond and James Bethell in defence. Luke Eastham was the central man in midfield, with Kieran Pipe to the right, and Matty Lee to the left. Oliver Mellor was the lone man upfront. Thornton kicked the game off and immediately went on the attack which saw them winning a corner. Matty crossed the ball in from the corner but there was no Thornton men attacking the cross and the keeper caught the ball in the middle of the area. Poulton won a free kick on the edge of the box after Matty went in strong on the opposing striker. The ball was lofted into the Thornton box and Luke headed clear to Oliver, he held the ball up well as he waited for support, the ball was then played out wide to Kieran who attacked to the right wing before crossing into the centre, but once again the keeper came off his line to catch the ball without a Thornton man challenging him. Matty carried the ball into the Poulton half before going down under a heavy challenge from the Poulton central midfielder. Luke took the kick but he couldn’t beat the first man and Poulton broke on the counter which eventually led to them winning a throw deep in the Thornton half. From the throw, Poulton worked an opening before getting a shot on goal which Teo pounced on. Kieran went down holding his hip and had to come off as play continued without him. As he re-entered the pitch, he won a loose ball and shot from just outside the box, forcing the keeper into making a fine save to tip the ball over the bar for a corner. From the corner, Poulton won the ball back and broke on the counter; they worked the ball well before shooting wide of the Thornton goal. After looking the stronger of the two teams, Thornton deservedly broke the deadlock; Luke fed the ball through the middle into the box for Matty who shot first time beyond the keeper and into the back of the net, 0-1. Matty almost put Thornton two goals ahead just before half time with a powerful shot from outside the box, but the keeper got down low to tip the ball around the post for a corner. Half Time 0-1 The opening minutes of the second half saw Thornton doubling their lead after a wonderful solo goal from Luke. He ran onto a loose ball midway inside his own half; with no teammates ahead of him he ran the ball over the halfway line, past two Poulton players and towards goal. With only the keeper to beat, he slotted the ball calmly into the bottom corner of the goal from just inside the box, 0-2. Teo produced a fine save down to his right from a low drive that was heading into the bottom corner of the goal. Also, James B made a timely challenge to knock the ball out for a Poulton throw, before James A deflected a shot behind for a corner to keep Thornton’s two goal advantage. Midway inside the oppositions half, Kieran was first to a bouncing ball, he flicked it over the central midfielders head before beating the full back, he was now through on goal but he couldn’t steer his shot into the back of the goal, and the ball went wide of the target by a matter of inches. Teo saved well once again, he then set his side off on the counter with a huge kick up field which fell into the path of Luke. He ran the ball up to the edge of the Poulton box before seeing his shot being parried by the Poulton keeper, Kieran struck the follow up and again the keeper parried before Kieran’s second attempt crashed against the crossbar. Poulton were now becoming desperate for a goal to get them back into the game, pushing more and more players further up the pitch. Luke was asked to drop into a more defensive role and sit just in front of his defence. A Thornton counter attack saw Kieran sprinting down the right wing with the ball at his feet before picking out Oliver in the centre with an inch-perfect cross. Oliver powered the ball past the Poulton keeper and into the back of the net to seal an excellent victory for Thornton, 0-3. Full Time 0-3 T.C.F.C Goal Scorers
