Thornton lined up with Teo Beaume in goal, protected by Ben Smyth and James Bethell in defence. The midfield saw Luke Eastham in the centre, Euan Hockey on the right, and Matty Lee on the left. Harry Wilson was the lone man upfront. James Almond was on the bench. Thornton kicked the game off but the first attack came from Lytham, which forced Luke back to help out his defence after James B was caught out of position. Luke knocked the ball out for a corner, and Teo held well when the cross came in. Teo saved once again minutes later, he released the ball quickly to Harry on halfway who ran the ball towards the Lytham box before finding Matty, he shot low into the corner but the keeper pushed the ball around the post for a corner. From the corner, Matty found Harry in the middle; he saw his shot being blocked two yards off the goal line. Lytham attacked down the wing before crossing the ball into the box, James B headed clear and Thornton broke on the counter, Luke played the ball into the path of Euan on the edge of the box, but he couldn’t find the target and the ball went wide of the far post. The game was end to end and both teams went close again in the next few minutes. First it was Matty who put in an excellent cross into the box for Luke, but he couldn’t work the keeper with his effort, and the ball went out for a goal kick. From the kick, Lytham worked the ball well up field and towards the Thornton box, their striker shot from the edge of the area but he couldn’t work Teo, and the ball went wide of the target. Matty put in a number of strong challenges, winning the ball with each tackle, but the referee listened to the home side’s appeals for free kicks and wrongly awarded them. Ben headed the ball clear from a Lytham corner, but only as far as the Lytham player on the edge of the box, he shot powerfully and Teo kept the ball out by saving it between his legs before gathering it at the second attempt. James B and Matty were looking very strong; with both of them breaking up the play and winning the ball back well for their team. The final action of the half saw Euan winning a corner which was taken by Matty but met by a Lytham head, which set them off on the counter, a long through ball brought Teo rushing out of his goals to clear, and the whilst blew for half time. Half Time 0-0 The second half began with Thornton having to be tight at the back with Lytham constantly looking for the opening goal. James B, Ben, and Teo were all fantastic in denying Lytham the breakthrough. Thornton’s first attack of the second half came through Luke and Matty. Matty played the ball out wide to Luke, who won a corner. Matty took the corner and Luke was first to the ball, but his shot hit the side netting. Luke cut out a Lytham attack with a well-timed sliding tackle to knock the ball out for a throw. The ball came back in and it was Luke who was there again to clear the ball. Ben was also looking strong, and he made a fantastic challenge to win the ball back for his side. He was then substituted, with James A coming on in his place. Euan was back to help out the defence with a strong tackle to knock the ball out for a corner. Matty was the first to the cross and he cleared the ball up to Harry who held it up well until his teammates came to support him. He played the ball out wide to Euan who carried it forward before crossing into the centre where Matty struck the ball first time, but he couldn’t beat the keeper who saved well down to his right. With less than five minutes to go, James A slid into a challenge about five yards outside the Thornton box, and the referee blew for a Lytham free kick. The ball flew into the box and Teo got a touch to it before attempting to punch clear but he couldn’t get enough on the ball and it fell to the feet of the Lytham striker who fired the ball into the back of the net, 1-0. Ben replaced Harry up front for the final two minutes of the game. As Thornton pushed forward for an equaliser, Lytham won the ball back and hit Thornton on the counter, making it 2-0. Full Time 2-0 Man of the Match was awarded to Matty Lee. T.C.F.C Goal Scorers |
