The summary of this match is very much like the summary for the season; started well, couldn't score goals, became disjointed, fell behind, regrouped, got our noses in front then saw it through to the end with a couple of scary moments. Thornton pressed in the opening 15 minutes with Poulton content to hoof the ball away but as they settled we became impatient and they began to break with some good passing moves. They scored on 21 minutes with a break down their right and a wicked cross which Alex Foster could do nothing with but head into his own net, becoming the 2nd Thornton player in consecutive years to score Poulton's goal of the season. Poulton then had the better of the next 15 minutes but like us found it difficult to control the ball when within shooting range and were reduced to a handful of wayward shots. The periods either side of half time were even and rather flat and as the 2nd half progressed I did comment that neither side looked likely to score. Enter Tom Smith who shortly after coming on got the ball where he likes it best, close to his feet 8 yards out, turning and shooting to equalise. Thornton were now on top without being totally in control and had to wait till 8 minutes from time to score the winner, Connor Addison bursting into the box with a strong run and shooting the ball into the roof of the net. Needlessly to say the last 8 minutes were nailbiting as Poulton sensed a draw could be had, but we held on reasonably comfortably with Ben Coulburn making good saves as he has done all season and the defence standing firm. A good effort from all 14 who played and apologies to the 2 subs who we couldn't get on with the game so tight. Ben was magnificent in goal, Alex Foster commanding in defence and the rest all worked hard but Cain Hutchinson gave yet another composed display to earn the final man of the match award. In analysing the season we have probably ended up with our target number of points though we've done it the hard way, taking 10 points more than I pessimistically expected off our nearest rivals but losing 10 points to 3 teams we should have done better against. We won a couple that our opponents probably thought were worthy of a draw but a couple of our defeats we should have got something out of. Of the 3 draws, we barely deserved the Wyre point, we should have beaten AFC by double figures and the Foxhall draw was a fair result. Results wise we have finished 2nd in the league, had a good run in the Lancashire Cup, losing out in the 4th round to eventual finalists Aston and could have been in the Hogan Cup final having dominated the semi for the whole 100 minutes; so all in all a successful season and one we can look back on with pride.
