A bit of history created this evening as, I'm reliably informed, that in doing the double over Lytham we became the first team to do so since the game went to 11 a side four seasons ago. A refreshing game it was too after Sunday's experience, with both teams trying to play the game the right way which resulted in a competitive but highly enjoyable 80 minutes. There was very little between the teams in the 1st half with Lytham shading it territorially with the wind behind them. As is often the case with a following wind, shots on goal were hard to control and most missed the mark, the biggest danger coming from overhit through balls and one or two speculative shots from distance which Ben Coulburn had to watch carefully. At the other end we had trouble hitting the ball into what was a blustery wind veering from head on to across from the right and balls into the box tended to fly off to the left. The nearest we came was a Jordan Schofield shot from 18 yards which wasn't too far away from the right hand post. With the wind in our favour for the 2nd half we began to claim territorial advantage though Lytham were quick on the break. The opening goal on 49 minutes was a belter and must be in contention for goal of the season. Reece Hughes took a free kick from our own half which carried through to Connor Addison on the 6 yard line. He turned and volleyed the ball into the roof of the net. Thornton then had Lytham on the ropes for the next 10 minutes and could have gone 2 up when Tom Smith turned and beat his marker 25 yards out only to be dragged back. The referee who been quite strict up to then totally ignored what was a blatent foul. The sting in the tail was that on one of their breaks forward Lytham equalised on 60 minutes when an awkward bounce wrong footed a defender whose attempted headed clearance was intercepted by the Lytham striker who nipped in to score from 15 yards. The game was now nicely poised but Thornton still had the upper hand and scored with 6 minutes left. Reece and Connnor were involved again as Reece's header was flicked on to Danny Hadgraft by Connor. The ball bounced towards the edge of the penalty area and the keeper looked to be favourite to get it, but Danny just got there before him and lobbed it over him into the net. This was a very composed performance from Thornton after we got to grips with the wind in our faces in the opening minutes. Hard to single out individual perfomances with the defence, midfield and forwards all playing together with great unity and purpose. The midfield trio of Connor, Loz Maddox and Alex Foster were singled out as being particularly instrumental in attaining the victory, with Loz being award the man of the match for his mature and inspiring performance.
