Thornton lined up with Alex McCaskill in goals, and a back two of Jack Porter and Jack Gardner. A midfield three saw Jonathan Cardwell in the centre, with Euan Hockey and Ryan Gardner on the wings. Harrison Monteiro began the game up front.

Thornton kicked the game off with Harrison playing the ball back to Jonathan who sent a long ball up field which Euan ran on to before winning a throw. From the throw Thornton lost possession of the ball but Jack G intercepted on halfway before clearing out for a Clifton throw.

Thornton lost the ball from a throw inside the Clifton half which allowed the opposition to break on the counter; Alex was alert and raced out of his box to clear the ball for a Clifton throw. Clifton cross the ball into the centre and Jack G put the ball behind for a corner. The ball came in from the corner and the Clifton striker volleyed it back across goal and into the bottom left corner of the goal, 1-0.

Jack P and Jack G were both there to clear the danger when Clifton went looking for a quick second from the restart.

Ryan received the ball on the left wing before making a strong run down the line, but he carried it too far and the ball went out for a goal kick. From the kick, Jonathan won the ball back and played it out wide to Euan who played a quick one-two with Harrison on the edge of the area before shooting over the bar.

Alex came out to narrow the angle as Clifton worked the ball into the Thornton box, the shot came in and Alex pushed it behind for a corner. Jack G headed clear to Harrison who dribbled the ball into the Clifton half before swinging the ball over to Jonathan, he played the ball into box but the pass was intercepted and Clifton broke on the counter. Jack P cleared the ball which took a deflection and went out for a Thornton throw.

Jonathan won possession from a Clifton throw and quickly laid the ball off to Harrison on the edge of the box, his shot was blocked and rebounded into the path of Ryan who too saw his being blocked.

Clifton won a free kick on the far side after Ryan pushed an opposing player as he tried to win the ball. The free kick came in at pace but Alex caught the ball well.

Jack P won the ball on half way before playing it up to Jonathan who then found Euan on the edge of the box, he controlled well before shooting, but he couldn’t hit the target and the ball went wide for a goal kick.

A Clifton counter saw Alex coming out of his goal to the edge of the box to try and block a shot but the ball flew past him, fortunately Jack P was there to head the ball over his bar from a yard out. From the corner, Alex made to fantastic diving saves to keep the ball out before Jack P cleared off his goal line to keep the score at 1-0.

Ryan won a corner for Thornton on the left, Jonathan got the ball across to Harrison but his shot went just wide of the goal. From the goal kick, Clifton sent a long ball up field and the ref blew for a free kick after the ball struck the hand of Jack P. Alex saved well again from the free kick before Jack G cleared the ball out to Ryan who released Harrison in the Clifton half, but once again he couldn’t find the target and the ball went out for a goal kick.

Thornton won a free kick just outside the Clifton box, Jonathan went for goal but saw his effort headed behind for a corner. He then sent in a cross from the corner which Harrison flicked beyond the Clifton keeper to level the scores just minutes before half time.

The final action of the first half saw Thornton looking to take the lead with a fast break after Jack P blocked a Clifton shot. The ball fell to Jonathan who played a long pass to Ryan but his shot was blocked on the edge of the box.

Half Time 1-1

Clifton got the second half underway and Ryan won the ball back immediately before Thornton were awarded a throw after an excellent challenge from a Clifton man. Jack P threw to Euan but he lost possession and Clifton broke, Alex once again cleared just outside his area.

Jack G pushed up when Thornton won a corner, the ball fell to him outside the box but his shot was blocked just inside the area.

Ryan dribbled the ball well down the left wing but lost the ball on the edge of the box when he tried to turn two players.

In search of a second goal, Harrison and Jonathan swapped positions in attempt to strengthen up the play.

Ryan won the ball on the left wing before playing it inside to Harrison, who skipped past his man before feeding the ball into Euan inside the box. The keeper raced off his line to smother the ball just as Euan was about to strike.

Alex made a few more decent saves to deny Clifton a second goal, and the two Jacks were doing well at the back to keep out Clifton. The forward players were working hard to try and create an opening but they just couldn’t seem to find a way through.

The best chance of the second half fell to Clifton from a corner. The ball was crossed in and met with a strong header in the centre of the box; fortunately the ball went wide of the post, but only by a matter of inches.

Man of the Match was awarded to Harrison Monteiro for an excellent performance in which he never gave up running and working hard, and he was looking for opportunities to get a breakthrough all the time.
