Luke Eastham was deployed in a defensive midfield role, whilst Harrison Monteiro and Ben Smyth provided the width from the wings. Harry Wilson was the lone man upfront. Oliver Mellor was the backup on the bench.
Fleetwood Town kicked the game off but Thornton won possession almost straight away through a strong challenge from Luke. Thornton then won a series of throws down the right touch line, each one bringing them closer to the Fleetwood Town goal. Thornton finally managed to get a shot away when Harrison struck the ball first time from just inside the box, but he couldn’t hit the target and the ball went out for a goal kick.
Fleetwood’s first attack of the game came on the counter, with their attacker getting in behind the Thornton defence he was through on goal; however, Kieran raced off his line to narrow the angle and forced the attacker to shoot wide of the goal.
Luke dropped back to help out his defence when he deflected a cross out for a corner. The ball came in and Luke once again cleared, this time out of the box and up towards the halfway line.
Harrison played a fantastic diagonal ball from inside his own half to Harry on the edge of the Fleetwood box, but as the ball bounced in front of the Thornton striker it skidded on the wet surface and away for a goal kick.
James A made a fantastic recovering tackle on the edge of his own box after the Fleetwood attacker skipped through the Thornton defence. He caught up with the Fleetwood man and slid into a challenge which saw him cleanly winning the ball and knocking it out for a throw.
Harry was looking strong upfront on his own, winning possession for his side by chasing down seemingly lost causes; he was also holding the ball up well before playing the ball to his wing men.
Stand-in keeper Kieran had been making some fine saves to shut out the Fleetwood attackers, but he couldn’t deny them an opening goal when they fired hard and low into the bottom corner of the goal, 1-0.
Minutes later, Kieran pushed the ball behind for a corner when he got his hands to a stinging shot that was heading for the top corner of the goal.
Fleetwood won a free kick on the edge of the Thornton area; Harrison met the ball as it was floated into the box, he brought it down and looked to hit the opposition on the counter. The ball was knocked out for a Thornton corner which James A took long into the box, Luke was first to the ball and he managed to find the target with a low shot, but the keeper got down well and smothered the ball.
The final minutes of the half saw both sides going close to getting the second goal of the game. Firstly, Kieran produced another fine save down to his right and held well from a low Fleetwood drive. Then Luke put a free kick narrowly wide of the Fleetwood goal.
Half Time 1-0
Half time changes saw James B replacing Kieran in goal, with Ben dropping back into the left back position and to allow Kieran to take his usual place on the wing.
Kieran set Thornton up on their first attack of the second half with an excellent run down the wing before shooting from out wide, the Fleetwood keeper could only push the ball into the path of Harrison but his show was blocked inside the box by a Fleetwood defender who set his side off on the counter. Fleetwood broke with pace and seconds later they were on the edge of the Thornton box, where they fired the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Harry was replaced by Oliver in a straight swap up front.
Within minutes of the restart, Thornton found themselves another goal down after another quick attack which caught Thornton off guard, 3-0.
James B made a fine save down low to push the ball out for Fleetwood corner; the cross came in and was quickly put behind for another corner. The ball came in again and James B was forced into making two saves in quick succession to deny Fleetwood a fourth goal.
Luke went close to getting his side a goal that would have also given them some hope of getting back into the game. He received the ball from Oliver on the edge of the area, seeing the keeper off the line he lofted the ball over his head, but he couldn’t get enough dip on it to get it under the bar, and instead it hit the top of the bar and over for a goal kick.
Kieran had to be replaced midway through the second half with a badly swollen foot after a nasty challenge in the corner of the pitch. Harry was brought back in to the action to replace him the Thornton winger.
Thornton were hit once again on the counter attack after Harrison went close with a low shot, the keeper saved and quickly released the ball to a team mate to set them off on the attack which resulted in a fourth goal, 4-0.
Full Time 4-0
Man of the Match was awarded to James Almond.
