Another solid team performance saw Thornton come out on top against Poulton at Cottam Hall. Thornton again only had 13 available players for the 3rd consecutive game with Mark Bone returning to the squad for the unlucky Danny Walsh as he was feeling under the weather as he did 2 weeks ago and following his injury last week whilst warming up. Thornton started the brighter and went close twice in the opening minutes through Mark Bone and Jordan Schofield, firing just wide and high respectively but in th 10th minute Loz Maddox broke the deadlock, running 20 yards from just inside the Poulton half before firing the ball past the Poulton keeper. Thornton continued to dominate for the next 20 minutes and Jordan Schofield went close twice from close range but as the half ended Poulton appeared to have weathered the pressure and saw the half out keeping the deficit to one. The opening minutes of the 2nd half were pretty much even though neither side seriously troubled the opposition keepers but mindful that one is never enough particularly against Poulton, Thornton changed things around a little and started to look for a 2 goal cushion. It came midway through the half (I forgot to look at my watch ) when Tom Smith chased a high ball into the box which neither he nor the keeper claimed succesfully. Both were slightly disorientated as the ball rolled out towards the right side of the box, but Tom was first to recover and retreiving the ball he shot from a tight angle, the keeper unable to stop it. Poulton fought back straight away and began to pressurise our defence pulling one back with a great strike from 25 yards which Ben Coulburn and probably most of the rest of us though was going wide. With Poulton now pressing hard for an equaliser we had the opportunity to grab a 3rd and following 2 dress rehersals in which Loz Maddox burst through and narrowly missed, Connor Addison made the game safe with 4 minutes left. A Poulton corner was cleared and Connor picked the ball up deep in our half and ran 40 yards before releasing the ball to Ash Calland. Ash unselfishly returned the ball to Connor who had continued his run and slid the ball home from 6 yards. A good all round team effort again with the aformentioned Loz, Connor and Ash playing particularly well but the man of the match award went to Isaac Hay who played at 100% for the whole 80 minutes with great confidence and effort; in fact he almost looked as though he was enjoying it.
